So, this blog is about the adventures and even misadventures of teaching high school. Some of what I post will be hilarious, some will be touching, some sad, but hopefully it will all be inspirational or help uplift your spirits in some way. I love teaching high schoolers, and I just want to give you a taste of what I do each day...I like sharing my calling with others. Happy reading!

Elevator Music
...So, I started a new thing with my 10th graders today. When they come into the room they are supposed to do silent, individual work until a few minutes after the tardy bell; in order to keep them quiet and focused, I've started playing music while they work. Today I started out with "In A Sentimental Mood" by John Coltrane and Duke Ellington. The plan was to begin with that and if they worked quietly while that was playing I would switch over to more popular music. Well, one of my students came out to the hallway and asked, "Miss Joe, why is there elevator music playing in the room?" I laughed and answered, "It's not elevator music!!! It's jazz. It's John Coltrane and Duke Ellington!" She said, "Well, it just sounds like elevator music to me...I was wondering why it was on. Are you going to change it?" Lol..."In A Sentimental Mood" elevator music? I think NOT!!!! Ah, these kids! Lol.
